What does HPL mean? HPL stands for “High Pressure Laminate.” During production, multiple layers of resin-saturated kraft paper are fused under high pressure to create a fully cured compact laminate. This process makes the material permanently resistant to rain, frost, and UV radiation.
Which Fundermax panels are suitable for balconies?
Max Compact Exterior in F-quality, Max Compact Authentic in F-quality, and m.look Exterior are ideal for balcony cladding and partition walls. All Exterior panels are HPL panels specifically designed for outdoor use. They provide excellent resistance to external influences such as impact, weather, and moisture, while remaining easy to clean.
By default, Max Compact Exterior panels are produced with the same decor on both sides. On request, the reverse side can also be finished in Balcony White, even for orders of just one piece.
For balcony flooring, especially robust materials are recommended. Max Compact Exterior Podio, for example, is a large-format high-pressure laminate panel specifically developed for long-term use as flooring. Thanks to its Hexa surface, it is slip-resistant and provides secure footing.

You can find all available finishes with Hexa surface in our product catalog.
2. Balcony cladding with Max Compact Exterior panels
Fundermax Max Compact Exterior panels are ideal for balcony cladding. The HPL panels should be attached to the installed substructure using the designated Max Compact Exterior balcony rivets or screws.
To allow for the required expansion clearance and prevent damage to the panel, the drill hole diameter must be larger than the diameter of the fixings.
As a rule of thumb: Take the shank diameter of the fixing (e.g. a screw) and add two millimeters.
3. Balcony partition walls made with Max Compact Exterior panels
Max Compact Exterior panels are also suitable for balcony partitions, helping to separate individual areas in long, narrow balcony complexes and arcades. Installed perpendicular to the building’s exterior wall, these privacy partitions can be mounted in various ways. Depending on the design, they extend from the top edge of the balcony flooring to the underside of the ceiling.

Comparing balcony panels: HPL, wood, and WPC
Anyone redesigning or renovating a balcony faces the question of which material to choose. Three materials are most commonly used:
- HPL compact panels (e.g. Max Compact Exterior) consist of resin-saturated kraft paper fused under high pressure. They are UV-stable, scratch-resistant, and can withstand rain, frost, and heat over the long term. The surface does not fade, warp, or require any additional treatment.
- Wood (e.g. larch, bangkirai) brings natural warmth and texture to the balcony. However, it requires significant maintenance: It must be oiled or stained every one to two years, otherwise the surface will turn gray. When exposed to moisture, wood can swell, crack, or develop moss.
- WPC (Wood Plastic Composite) combines wood fibers with synthetic materials and is easier to maintain than wood. However, WPC can heat up and expand slightly in strong sunlight. The selection of finishes is also usually much smaller than with HPL.
If you are looking for a low-maintenance, stylish, and durable balcony solution, Fundermax HPL Compact panels are an excellent choice.
Planning and installation of HPL balcony panels
A properly constructed substructure forms the basis for long-lasting results. Support battens made of aluminum or stainless steel provide stability and ensure the necessary rear ventilation.
Three things are especially important during installation:
- Allow for expansion joints: HPL panels expand slightly in response to temperature fluctuations. Depending on the required expansion allowance, the drill hole diameter must be larger than the diameter of the fixing.
- Work with a specialist contractor: Processing compact laminates requires experience with the material. Fundermax recommends working with a specialized facade construction or carpentry company.
- Make use of the technical documentation: Installation instructions and processing guidelines are available in our downloads section.
